Mens Gynecomastia / Breast Surgery

Male Breast Surgery : A Step-by-Step Guide

Male breast reduction is performed on men with gynecomastia, or abnormal breast tissue development. While many people have not heard of this condition, it is surprisingly very common. Some statistics show that up to half of all men are affected by gynecomastia to some degree.

A typical male breast reduction procedure usually takes about two hours. The following provides a basic overview of how they are performed. The patient is given anesthesia. While it is usually performed with general anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation may also be an option.
The surgical technique used depends on the amount and composition of excess breast tissue.

The most common surgical options include:

  • Liposuction

  • Excision

  • Combination of liposuction & excision

With an excision technique, the incision is made either on the edge of the areola or in the armpit. In extreme cases, however, longer incisions may be required to enable the surgeon to remove larger volumes of tissue. This incision allows the surgeon to cut away excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin to sculpt your chest into a more masculine silhouette. If there is a significant volume of excess fat, it may be removed with liposuction.

After the breast tissue is removed, the surgical incisions are closed with sutures.

Is Male Breast Reduction for Me?

Men who are embarrassed or self-conscious about their chest and who want a more masculine shape may benefit from gynecomastia resection. This problem usually begins at puberty and can become more noticeable with time especially with weight gain or certain medications. Many of these men would never take off their shirt at the beach or in public. Often the surgical result is a dramatic change to a more normal male chest, usually with very minimal scars.
